It’s everywhere and on everyone these
days… cashmere has become a year round staple in the most
fashionable wardrobes around the world. Here at Shopflemington.com
we love it.
What makes cashmere so wonderful? The softness
of the yarn, which feels so great against the skin. It’s
also very warm for its weight, so on even the coldest of days,
a lightweight sweater made from cashmere can keep a body warm.
We wanted to know more, so she checked in with the experts and
found that all cashmere is not created equal. With so many options
out there, it’s good to know how to spot the best quality
for the money.
Cashmere fibers come from Kashmir goats that are
usually bred in India and the Mongolian region of China. The fibers
are quite precious because each year one goat’s coat produces
only enough of these fine soft hairs to make about 1/3 of a sweater.
Long, fine fibers produce the highest quality yarns and sweaters
knit from these yarns tend to pill less than sweaters knit from
yarns made from shorter fibers.
When it comes to scarves, robes, blankets and
other products knit from cashmere, something the experts call ‘hand
feel’ is paramount. It should be plush and smooth, but not
slick. Slickness can mean a couple of things… the stitches
might be a little loose, or the sweater might have been over pressed.
(This can happen at the end of manufacturing or even by a dry cleaner.)
This tightness of the stitches is called the tension.
An expert might say, ‘the tension was too tight when they
knit this cashmere sweater. That’s why it feels a little
stiff and not as soft as it should be.’ And if the tension
is too loose, then the garment won’t hold its shape as well,
it might be a little droopy, and, as mentioned above, the hand
feel will be slick. We always look for cashmere sweaters
that drape nicely on the body, a good indicator that the tension
is just right.
Some complain about the fact that cashmere pills.
But there isn’t much that anyone can do about that. It’s
just a part of wearing cashmere. A disposable razor to quickly
and very gently shave off the pills that inevitably accumulate
on her sweaters, works everytime. There are other tools sold for
pill removal on sweaters, and they all should work on cashmere.
Experts do seem to agree that hand washing cashmere
sweaters brings out and maintains their softness. They suggest
a gentle detergent, lots of rinsing, and rolling the wet sweater
inside a towel instead of wringing or twisting. Drying flat—never
in a dryer—is also important.
And what about those cashmere sweaters being sold
for under $50? Our experts here at Shopflemington.com warn that
one gets what she pays for, and in terms of cashmere that definitely
applies. A good quality cashmere sweater, one that you can rest
assured is 100% cashmere, and knit so that it will last for more
than one season, shouldn’t cost less than about $100. In
fact, as we have seen, that is just the beginning when it comes
to cashmere prices, which can increase with the weight of the sweater
(more yarn used), intricate stitching (more difficult and time
consuming to knit), and any of the other extras designers add to
their creations.
All in all, experts praised the quality of cashmere
sweaters available on line at L.L.Bean where the ability to buy
large quantities allows for great quality and value passed on to
shoppers....www.llbean.com
